In todays lesson we were given four improvisation tasks, in which we had to incorporate different themes and objectives within our dancing.
Our first task involved travelling across the room keeping our movements on various different levels. Firstly we were asked to keep are movements to the ground and small, so this included rolls and low energy movements. Then this progressed to medium energy movements, gradually making our improvisation more exciting. Lastly, we were asked to add high energy movements into our improvisation, this included leaps, jumps and kicks.
Secondly, we had to think of an adjective and incorporate this into our dancing, I chose the feeling of excitement, therefore I included high energy sharp movements into my dancing. In contrast to other people who chose the feeling of sadness, where the movements were kept lower with and expression of sadness.
Thirdly, we had to do movements with the inspiration of our names, using different body parts, for instance an around kick represented a C in my name.
Lastly, we had to improvise with the inspiration of our phone numbers, for example: a 0 was a stunt, a 1 was shown through stillness, a jump represented the number 2, a 3 was a turn, a 4 was shown through off balance, a roll represented a 5, the number 6 was a swing, a kick was for a 7, an 8 was shown through a change in direction, and if you have a 9 in your phone number then you could do any of the above.
All of these improvisation tasks were to build on our choreography skills.
After reflecting back on my very first choreography lesson, I have been able to discover my strengths and weaknesses. I think I did well with expressing emotions into my dancing, however there is a lot I'd like to focus on improving. For example, I'd like to expand my knowledge on contemporary dance, so then I will be able to include many different movements into my choreography, as I felt like at times I was quite repetitive. This is because I am very inexperienced in the dance style of contemporary so I struggled to think of movements to do throughout the class. Furthermore, I'd like to make my choreography flow more, with lots of practice I hope that I can improve on my weaknesses quickly.

My name
I am looking forward to improving on my choreography skills throughout my time here at The School of Ballet Theatre UK.
You have clearly evaluated your strengths and weaknesses throughout the post. This included details about how you can improve your weaknesses over the course of the module, well done. I am also pleased with how you have structured your post, including the two videos that are clearly labelled, stating which creative task they are linked to.
ReplyDeleteAlthough you have made an adequate attempt to address each question within the task, there are areas of the post where you have not expanded on what you have created, try to go into detail about why you might incorporate certain movements and the purpose of the class exercise.
This then leads us onto your thoughts and feelings throughout the lesson. Question how each creative task made you feel, if you found anything difficult, and how this affected your movement. Consider how you would change the movement if you had to perform this task again.
It would also be beneficial if you mentioned how your strengths assisted you within the creative tasks in the lesson.
Overall, some very good aspects within the post, I look forward to reading the improvements.

Thank you for your feedback Miss Norman.
DeleteI liked the movements when you held the shapes as it added apprehension for your next movement. I was able to work out your letters in your motif as your movements were very clear and precise
ReplyDeleteThank you very much Eliza! I'm really pleased that you were able to identify the letters in my motif.
DeleteI really liked the choreography you have created for the phone number and name tasks as I feel you really show the adjective of excitement through the fast and sharp dynamics you perform.
ReplyDeleteI like the way you have set out your blog as you have made clear and relevant points about the tasks informing the reader about the different challenges you had to face.
how do you feel the first improvisation task helped to prepare you for the following creative tasks and what do you feel the purpose of it was?
overall I really enjoyed watching your choreography and reading the interesting points you have stated.
Thank you very much for your comment. I feel like the purpose of the improvisation task was to build our confidence in dancing and to try new things. I think it has helped me prepare for the other creative tasks as I took movements from my improvisation and included them in my choreography. I really appreciate all the comments you made.
DeleteI really like all the elements you have included in your phrases. Your blog highlights all the different points you did in the lesson. Following on from the first task how did you find doing this? like your strengths and weaknesses.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your feedback Abi. I found the first quite challenging as I'd never improvised before, but as I got into it, it became much easier. I think I was quite good at showing the different levels.
DeleteI really liked both phrases and your blog clearly states the key points of both creative tasks. I really enjoyed the video of the name phrase but perhaps you could elaborate a little bit more in your writing? And will you a similar creative process when you come to creating your solo?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your feedback Hannah. Yes I think I will use the creative process of spelling out a word through my movements in my final solo piece.
