Wednesday 18th September
In today’s lesson we were given two main tasks, one of them
was completed in pairs so you had to be able to work well as a team; the other
task was completed individually so you had to be independent. In both tasks you
needed to include choreographic devices.
Last week we had to work with a partner and combine either
our name or phone number choreographic pieces, I chose to include my phone
number routine, whereas my partner Abi included her name piece to our joint
routine. So, our first task this week involved expanding on our joint routine, which
involved adding choreographic devices to make our routine more exciting and
complex. The devices we included were: unison, contrast, retrograde, embellishment,
repetition and climax. Furthermore we used the mirror effect in the middle of
our routine to make it more dynamic and eye catching. I felt like we both
contributed equally to creating this enjoyable piece, and individually came up
with some good ideas, highlighting that we work well as a team.
Our second task was to come up with a completely new routine
with the inspiration of our zodiac signs. My star sign is Cancer so I had to
highlight some of the traits I have with movements in my dancing. For example I
expressed the cancer trait of gentle through a soft arm movement at the very
beginning of my piece. I showed the trait of dedication by doing two grande
jette en tournan, the first one being small and the next increasing in size, to
create the idea of never giving up. This movement also included the
choreographic device of repetition. Furthermore I expressed the trait of carefulness
through a slow develope going through the feet.

You have included some interesting points within your blog!
ReplyDeletePlease think about the following points:
- More detail on the various choreographic devices we looked at during class is needed. (you could insert photos of the hand-out to illustrate this).
- What is the purpose of integrating choreographic devices and the exercise set in class?
- How did the integration of four choreographic devices affect your final phrase of movement?
- Did you notice any strengths or weaknesses? If so, how will you develop your weaknesses/ how did your strengths assist you within the task?
- Were you successful with the task set? Was it readable to the audience?
- Which choreographic devices did you use and why?
- What was the purpose of performing these tasks in front of the rest of the class?
What you have written about your zodiac task is good however I would like you be more reflective in your writing.
Think about:
Do you think the purpose of the movement successfully came across to the audience?
How did you find this creative task? Interesting? Easy? Difficult? Why?
How did the allowance of more time affect the final product of your phrase?
Did you notice any strengths or weaknesses? If so, how will you develop your weaknesses/ how did your strengths assist you within the task?
Please go on to discuss the next step of integrating Choreographic devices.
Discuss:
What chorographic devices did you integrate and how/ why?
Were you successful with the task set? Was it readable to the audience?
Please remember to link your videos in your writing, so as a reader there is a clear connection.
You have included interesting points, well done!

DeleteThank you for your comment. In relation to your feedback, I have now added photo of the choreographic devices definitions. The purpose of integrating choreographic devices into our work is to overall make the routine more interesting for the audience. Additionally it may make some parts stand out more as well as extending the routine. By adding four choreographic devices to our phrase, it made it longer and more interesting. I found it challenging to find ways to incorporate choreographic devices at first, but I overcame this by looking at each individual movement and exploring ways to add a choreographic device. My strength in today’s creative session was being able to come up with movements in order to express the given traits of my zodiac sign, which helped a lot in creating a phrase. In my opinion I think both tasks were successful, as I believe I communicated that traits of my zodiac sign well, although I could expand on this by adding emotion in order to further evoke my given traits. Additionally, my collaborative piece with Abi was successful, as I think we incorporated the choreographic devices well, and they were readable to the audience. We used the choreographic devices of: unison, contrast, repetition, retrograde, embellishment and climax. These choreographic devices not only extended our dance, but also made our routine more interesting for the audience to watch, due to the contrasting levels, and use of retrograde. I believe the purpose of performing our phrases to the class was to receive constructive feedback from our peers, and also to gain confidence in performing. I really enjoyed both of these creative tasks and found them very interesting.
I really enjoyed watching your collaborative work with Abi and also reading your blog, however I wondered why you chose the number routine compared to the name and what you thought was more strong about it?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment. I decided to choose the number routine as overall I felt more confident performing it, compared to the name routine. I felt like my choreography was stronger in the way it flowed more than my name routine, also I preferred the movements I incorporated in my number piece.
DeleteI enjoyed your style of choreography; it is very gentle and elegant but with some powerful dynamics throughout. When creating, did you find it easier to work independently or in a collaborative setting?
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Ella, I'm pleased that you enjoyed my style of choreography. I would say that I found it easier to work in a collaborative setting as we could join our ideas together.
DeleteYour motif with Abi was really exciting to watch due to all of the developments you had made to it! Did you have any challenges when adding the choreographic techniques? What led you to choose the ones that you used?
ReplyDeleteThank you very much Mhairi! As we worked together and were able to combine our thoughts and ideas I didn't find the task too challenging, although it was quite hard to work out where we could incorporate choreographic devices. We chose those particular choreographic devices as we felt like they made the whole routine more exciting. Furthermore, because we used the choreographic device of retrograde it made our routine longer.
DeleteI like how you used videos to enhance your ideas and you can clearly see your development. Did you find adding choreographic devices to your previous choreography hard? is so can you explain why?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your feedback Lucy. I did find adding choreographic devices quite challenging as it was difficult to work out where to incorporate them.
