Week 4- Key Practitioner Lesson Two

Wednesday 2nd October

Choreography lesson 4

Today in class we continued developing on the zodiac and shapes task from the previous two lessons. And then we went onto a completely new task in which we were given a stimulus to incorporate this into our movements.

Firstly, we performed our zodiac routines in small groups to the class. Before I began, I told my peers my given traits for the star sign of cancer. Which were: gentle, careful, dedicated, caring, greedy and sensitive. So then when I performed my piece they could look out too see if I included movements which implied these traits. I was pleased with the material I presented to my peers and my teacher as I think I evoked the traits clearly. Although I think my next steps would be to expand on my routine and imply more of the traits, as I found this quite challenging to think of movements with the more complex traits like strong sense and possessive.

We then moved on to performing our shapes routine inspired by Justin Pecks choreography, which we presented in small groups to the class. I found this task challenging due to the peculiar shapes we had to show in our movements. My teacher gave me feedback in order for me to improve my routine; she suggested that I use more levels in which I will take into consideration when developing my piece further.

Lastly, we began our research into gaining inspiration from a stimulus. The teacher showed us a video of raining dripping down a window, and we were then told to imply the motion of this in our dancing. At the beginning we were asked to work individually, I started on the spot and made my movements small with low energy, to suggest the sliding of the rain down the window. I then gradually increased my energy and dynamics to evoke more powerful and heavier rain.

After doing movements by our self, we were then asked to progress to doing contact work with our peers to present the idea of two rain drops joining and the impact this has. I really enjoyed today’s class and I am looking forward to developing my final assessment piece with inspiration from a choreographer and a stimulus.

  1. Your zodiac piece was very good and I agree- you very clearly and effectively portrayed your zodiac sign through your movements. How do you think the last improvisation task about rain has affected your creative process when choreographing in the future ?

    1. Thank you for your comment. In the future I will definitely explore the creative process of improvisation when creating my own choreography, as I felt like this was a very efficient way of coming up with new material.

  2. Your elegant, soft dance style lent itself to most of your zodiac characteristics. How did you feel doing the duet of the raindrops? Did you feel the theme was portrayed better as a duet?

    1. Thank you Eliza. I enjoyed doing the duet of the raindrops, and yes I think that the idea was portrayed better as a duet as you were able to influence and combine each others movements, to imply raindrops more effectively than dancing individually.

  3. I like how informative this post is. Especially where you are talking about the improvisation. I would like to know how you could show the word "possessive" in a movement or a phrase?

    1. Thank you Nathan. I would show the word 'possessive' by a gesture which I would include in the middle of my phrase.

  4. You have covered the tasks in good detail, well done. I definitely agree that you projected many of the characteristics you intended to portray in your zodiac solo.
Which task did you find the most challenging/easy to do and why? Has these tasks helped your movement vocabulary?

    1. Thank you for your comment Louisa. I found the raindrop improvisation task the most challenging, as I struggled to come up with movements which implied rain, although after a while I found it easier. These tasks have definitely improved my movement vocabulary; I went out of my comfort zone and explored new movements in order to express the tasks given.

  6. Please can you take a look at the task set. During this lesson we continued our research looking at two other key practitioners, Wayne McGregor and Crystal Pite. We analysed video's relating to each choreographers work and creative process and started to generate material using their specific methods. Please can you reflect on how the creative tasks we did related to each practitioners. Reflect and review your experience.

Over the past few weeks we have generated movement based on a variety of contrasting creative exercises, including:
    - Name
    - Phone Number
    - Zodiac
    - Shape/ Patterns
    - Rain Concept

In summary, discuss how you responded to the more creative exercises, what did you find easy or difficult? Have these processes allowed you to form your own ideas for your own creative processes to create movement? If so, what are your new ideas?

    1. Thank you for your feedback. The shape/patterns creative task linked to Justin Peck, as this is the main choreographic process he uses. The rain concept task links to Crystal Pites creative process, as she watches simple videos as inspiration for her choreography. I think this experience was very useful as I now have a wide range of creative processes that I could use in my own choreography. These tasks have definitely improved my movement vocabulary; I went out of my comfort zone and explored new movements in order to express the tasks given.I found the raindrop improvisation task the most challenging, as I struggled to come up with movements which implied rain, although after a while I found it easier. In my future choreography I will definitely be using the creative process of spelling out a word within my movements.
