Week 7- Research

Wednesday 30th October

My chosen stimulus had many different ways you could interpret it, but the way I chose to look at it was that the man was suffering with a mental illness. Therefore, I decided to take further research into mental health, to find out the way it affects people. I will then attempt to portray these feelings into my choreography piece.

Firstly, I tried to identify the mental illnesses the image was implying the most. I came to the conclusion that the stimulus gave me the idea of depression, due to the fact the image is painted in dark colours, suggesting sadness. Furthermore, although we can’t see the man’s facial expression, I get the impression that he is sad because of the fact he is looking down meaning his body language is enclosed.

Firstly, I looked at the definition of depression, which is- ‘A mental condition characterized by feelings of severe despondency and dejection, typically also with feelings of inadequacy and guilt, often accompanied by lack of energy. I then took some research into the symptoms of depression, to then express some of these into my routine. Someone suffering with depression is usually: have low moods or sadness, low self-esteem and has no motivation or interest in things. Additionally someone with depression may feel also feel: frustrated, anxious and alone. I am going to show these feelings through my facial expression as well as movements using low energy to present the idea of depression. After further research I also discovered that someone living with depression has good and bad days, almost like an ongoing rollercoaster. Specifically this is extremely common for people suffering with bipolar depression, where there moods can quickly change from really high to really low. I think it was important for me to take research into the symptoms and feeling of the mental illness depression so then I can portray my chosen stimulus in the most accurate way.

I then went on to think about how I can express mental health; specifically depression into my choreography piece. The music I have chosen relates to the stimulus very well as the main idea is that the artist is suffering and needs help, however they don’t  want to give up, perhaps indicating the idea of suffering mentally but the hopefulness and determination to recover from it. I will present this idea by doing low energy movements and floor work to express suffering. Contrasting to this I will do high energy movement including jumps and turns to show the good days. As well as this, I will use the choreographic device of repetition with some movements to imply determination. Similarly I will constantly be changing levels to show the idea of fighting with an illness and having both good and bad days.

  1. In this blog it is very clear you have done a lot of research on mental health and it’s effects as well as symptoms. As well as using your facial expressions, how are you going to show different emotions in your piece?

    1. Thank you very much for your comment Megan! I will show positive emotions through high energy movements, using high levels (jumps, leaps) Then I will portray negative emotions through lower energy movements, specifically floor work.

  2. well done this is a really clear and well thought out blog.
You have included some great points and information relating to your idea based upon mental health.
I like how you have discussed how you will show your research and the emotional impact of mental health through your facial expressions.
how far do you feel this research has improved your understanding upon mental health?
I really enjoyed reading the information you have collected relating to your stimulus.

  3. You have made a good start researching behind your final idea. At the beginning of the post, you have clearly described what the piece will be about and have used research to give depth and greater understanding behind your idea. Further, discus how your observations will influence your piece and enhance your creative work as you move forward. I would say that the post currently sits around the 2:2 mark; if you wish to increase this towards a 1:1, you should consider the quality of your sources, thinking outside the box to incorporate further primary sources within your work. Think about how you can further your research to develop your idea as well as the movement and characteristics of your creative piece. As an idea, maybe consider looking at some of the causes of depression as well as stories of people that have experienced/ are experiencing this mental illness.
Please also revisit your bibliography. Remember to include referencing/ citations within your work.

    1. Thank you for your comment. I will take on board your feedback.
I took some further research into the causes of depression and discovered that there is no single cause, it can occur for a variety of different reasons and it has many different triggers. But some thing that can cause it are: stressful events, your personality, family history, giving birth, loneliness, alcohol and drugs and illness.

  4. Well done this is a very clear blog. You have displayed many good ideas on how you will start to develop your choreography. I like how you came to find your topic, mental health, within your stimuli by looking at the colour of the piece and posture of the figure.
Are there any figures you could add to your post based on mental health? Also, what has your research taught you? Has it helped you with any new ideas for your choreography?

    1. Thank you for your comment Louisa. My research has given me a wider knowledge on the effects of mental health, particularly depression. It has definitely made me come up with new ideas of how I can imply depression through my gestures and facial expressions.
