Week 10- Studio performance

I have now completed my final solo piece, and I todays class I performed it in front of my teacher. In this blog I am going review and reflect on my work. To start with, the learning outcomes we were given for our solo were: ‘to critically analyse and evaluate a variety of works by a chosen choreographer’ I feel as though I have successfully completed this outcome, as I have analysed 3 of my chosen choreographer Justin Peck’s pieces, furthermore I have incorporated some of the movements he uses into my own choreography. Another learning outcome was to ‘demonstrate the application of theories, processes, devices and technical dance skills to choreograph, create and design original dance to pre selected stimuli’. I also feel as if I have covered these criteria in my choreography. The final learning outcome is to ‘critically evaluate and reflect on personal choreographic work’, which I will complete after my assessment.

After today’s studio rehearsal in preparation for my solo assessment in 2 weeks, I discovered that I needed to change a few things. For instance, my movements didn’t quite fill my music at the end of my routine, therefore I need to add some more material to this section, and this is also something my teacher pointed out as an area for improvement. Additionally, I do many reaches throughout my solo, and my teacher suggested that I reach a bit further too really exaggerate these movements. Furthermore, during creative session 2 my teacher suggested that I incorporate one of our previous creative tasks by spelling out a word within my movements, which I have now applied to my choreography by spelling out the word ‘depression’. I feel as if this feedback has made my work more successful, as it was the inspiration I needed to come up with new material for my solo. Additionally, I would like to add embellishments to some of my current movements, like intricate arm and head actions to not only make my solo more interesting and engaging but it will also further show my chosen stimulus. For instance, this could be placing both hands on my head whilst turning instead of keeping them in a basic position.

A few things I am going to consider before performing my solo for my final assessment are: firstly by staying engaged throughout my solo, I will do this by making frequent interaction with the audience and keep my facial expressions alive at all times. Additionally, the purpose behind my piece is to express the idea of living with a mental health illness, the choreography I have created shows this well so I should be able to sustain this idea throughout my choreography. I have also created an energy level timeline to show how this changes over time.

  1. this is a great blog and I can clearly see that you have reviewed your piece in detail.
You have discussed about the feedback you have received and how you will include this within in your piece to improve it as a whole.
Do you feel it was helpful performing your piece full out in the studio and them receiving feedback?
well done tis is a great blog.

    1. Thank you very much for your comment Rosabella. I found this task really helpful as I was able to dance it full out and work out my spacing. Furthermore, I was able to identify what I needed to improve on after receiving feedback from my teacher.

  2. How did the Studio Performance create an impact on your creative process? Within your post you stated you would like to further add embellishment to your piece by 'placing both hands on my head whilst turning'. What would this represent/ how would this use of embellishment enhance/ relate to your theme? What was the purpose behind creating an energy timeline? Also how will you ensure to create the best possible outcome?

This is a well-considered post and I feel you have shown a clear understanding of the topic, I feel the work you have produced so far is possibly around the 2:2 criteria. If you are looking to progress to a 2:1/1:1, it will be worth considering the quality of your reflective skills, research, ability to answer the questions and critical thinking. By demonstrating well-developed critical thinking alongside arguments as well as critically reflecting your process, showing awareness of own strengths and weaknesses and considering possibilities, and their consequences to develop appropriate actions, it will offer new questions for your consideration and may help you identify areas you might not have considered with within your project. Can you ensure you have evidence of these areas within your work.

    1. Thank you for your feedback Miss Norman. The studio performance overall allowed me to perform more, I don't think it really had an impact on my creative process. The use of adding that particular embellishment will represent suffering mentally and the idea of fighting with your mind. My overall theme is to express the idea of suffering with a mental health illness, particularly depression, so I feel like adding this embellishment links to my chosen theme very well. The purpose of creating an energy timeline was to be able to visually see how much energy we need to put in at one time, and also to add contrast to our choreography. To ensure I create the best possible outcome I will act upon the feedback I have received.
